NXP delivers AI-powered BMS digital twin for EVs

NXP has developed an AI-powered, cloud-connected BMS digital twin for EVs that improves battery range, efficiency, safety, and lifetime.

NXP Semiconductors has developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered, cloud-connected electric vehicle (EV) solution that uses its S32K3-based high-voltage battery management system (HVBMS) and S32G GoldBox reference design for vehicle networking, along with Electra Vehicles, Inc.’s EVE-Ai 360 Adaptive Controls. The new solution connects the BMS to the cloud to leverage an AI-powered battery digital twin that is expected to improve EV battery range, efficiency, safety, and lifetime.

The use of AI-powered digital twin models in the cloud enables improved prediction and control of the physical BMS in real time, said NXP, improving battery performance and battery state of health by up to 12%, while enabling potential new applications such as EV fleet management.

Batteries are the most expensive part of an EV, said NXP, and AI-powered digital twin cloud services can improve the estimates for the battery’s state of health and state of charge for improved efficiency, adapting to changes in battery health to improve control decisions.

The technology has the potential to offer a number of benefits, according to NXP. These include adaptive battery control to improve the battery’s performance and extend its lifetime and driver insights such as range and speed recommendations. Another potential application is providing fleets with usage insights, such as vehicle charging times and battery predictive diagnostics.

When a battery reaches its automotive useful life, there is still up to 80% residual capacity available for other uses as a second-life battery, said NXP. It can be used for residential energy storage systems, for example, to help reduce energy bills.

NXP will showcase a demo at electronica 2022, Nov. 15-18, Munich, Germany. The company will show how AI improves EV battery performance when EVs use Electra’s EVE-Ai connected via the cloud to AI-powered battery digital twins. Visit NXP at booth #C2 578.
