NXP Semiconductors Unveils Enhanced Platform for 18 Hour Audio Playback in Music Phones

NXP Semiconductors announced the new Nexperia Cellular System Solution 5211 for the delivery of advanced and affordable MP3 capability to mobile handset users.

Highly integrated, low-power solution brings MP3/video playback, FM stereo recording and a number of additional applications to affordable mobile phones

The new solution supports stereo recording from FM radio, MP3 and video playback, a mega-pixel digital camera interface, USB charging, connect-to-PC and Bluetooth stereo for a complete, vibrant multimedia offering.

The Nexperia cellular system solution 5211 is a fully integrated, single-core platform equipped with the latest audio features, ensuring excellent sound quality that is comparable to best-in-class portable media players. The highly efficient and cost-effective package enables 18 hours of MP3 playback, five hours of talk time, 750 hours of standby time and nine hours of video playback.

Encompassing a highly compact 10mm x 10mm baseband processor and 6mm x 6mm power management unit with integrated charging functionality, the system solution 5211 presents an attractive proposition to handset manufacturers looking for cutting edge audio features in a small form-factor package. As a result, the system solution 5211 can be designed into slimmer and more fashionable mobile devices.

The system solution 5211 supports an extensive portfolio of multimedia functions, but unlike other MP3 solutions for mobile handsets, it does so without the need for an external coprocessor. Removing the need for an external processor can reduce a handset’s bill of materials by $5-8 in comparison to double-CPU solutions and reduces the handset’s power consumption for improved battery life.

“Music phones, which must handle both calls and music playback, are an entirely different proposition than regular handsets and MP3 players. Subsequently, most music phones today are considered high-end and often too expensive for the majority of consumers,” said Christophe Joyau, product marketing manager, NXP Semiconductors. “The latest solution from NXP; however, delivers excellent audio quality and support for a host of mobile applications in one easily integrated package. In addition, our single CPU architecture offers significant cost advantages in comparison to double-core offerings on the market.”

As a specialist music phone package, the system solution 5211 is fully USB compatible, incorporating USB boot, download and charge functions. Furthermore, for the first time, consumers can record in stereo directly onto a handset from FM radio. An advanced stereo Bluetooth set is also fully supported, enabling users to enjoy their mobile music collection wirelessly.

The Nexperia cellular systems solution 5211 can be upgraded with the LifeVibes Music Player solution from NXP Software. This music player solution enables easy synchronization of the phone music collection with a PC Windows Media Player, fast navigation through the music collection through a music library, and playback of both Windows Media and OMA v2 DRM protected songs. The player can be complemented with a range of music enhancements that enrich the music listening experience, including Concert Sound Stereo Widening.
