Offline transformers boast LLC resonant half-bridge topology

Wurth Electronics Midcom has released a new series of offline transformers that employs the LLC resonant half-bridge topology. The MID-LLCEPC transformers utilize the low switching losses of the LLC topology to yield better efficiency.

The LLC resonant half-bridge topology is considered a highly attractive option for higher power levels. The LLC transformers — developed with an EPC40 package — are capable of handling power levels of up to 400 W.

Dean Huumala, product marketing and development manager at Wurth Electronics Midcom, says that the MID-LLCEPC series has been designed with a crimp terminal, which ensures better solder integrity on Litz wire terminations.

All four of the parts in the series are designed to take power from a PFC boost converter at a voltage ranging from 340 Vdc to 420 Vdc switching at 70 kHz to 140 kHz.

These new EPC-style offline LLC transformers are best suited for LLC resonant converters, high-efficiency switch-mode power supplies, display panels, telecom circuits, and audio applications.
