Designed specifically for high-end smartphone rear-facing cameras, Omnivision announced the OV50H high-resolution 50-megapixel (MP) image sensor at CES 2023. Featuring dual conversion gain (DCG) technology and powered by a 1.2-micron (µm) pixel in a 1/1.3-inch optical format, the sensor combines “flagship-level” low-light and autofocus performance.
Built on Omnivision’s PureCel Plus‑S stacked-die technology, the OV50H supports 12.5 MP at 120 frames per second (fps) and high dynamic range (HDR) at 60 fps and is the company’s first sensor to feature horizontal/vertical (H/V) quad phase detection (QPD). QPD enables 2×2 phase detection autofocus (PDAF) across the sensor’s entire image array and ensures that both horizontal and vertical orientations are in the same frame with 100% coverage, improving distance calculation and low-light performance as well as providing faster autofocus, said Omnivision.
When combined with on-chip remosaic for the QPD color filter array, the solution provides premium image quality for the wide and ultra-wide rear-facing cameras, added the company.
Key features of the OV50H include 4-cell binning that enables 12.5 M mode for video and preview with 2.4 µm equivalent sensitivity for low-light performance and supports up to 120 fps with 4× low-light sensitivity. The image sensor can achieve 12.5 M at 30 fps HDR with 100+ dB dynamic range when using DCG + very short-staggered exposure HDR or 3-exp staggered HDR. It also has DCG HDR with on-chip combination and staggered HDR support for flexibility of different HDR modes and supports staggered HDR in crop zoom mode. It also supports full 50-MP Bayer output and 2× crop zoom functionality as well as programmable controls for frame rate, mirror and flip, binning, cropping, and windowing.
Samples of the OV50H image sensor will be available in April 2023. Visit Omnivision’s Virtual CES 2023 Customer Experience Center January 5-8, 2023.
