Musician plays original song using vintage gadgets

Director James Houston teamed up with musician Julian Corrie for the following music video, entitled “Polybius,” which features Corrie in the middle of an emptied swimming pool in Glasgow’s Govanhill Baths, playing an original song using nothing more than retired gadgets and devices.

Polybius - old electronics

Included in the long list of recycled electronics: old floppy drives, SEGA mega drives, CRT televisions, Gameboys, Commodore 64s, and more.

“Except for Julian’s voice, everything you hear is coming from a vintage console or computer peripheral,” says Houston in an interview with Wired magazine, in which he describes the video. “Emotion is easily manipulated via nostalgia,” he adds. “And the emotional impact is stronger if the devices seem as though they’re trying to prove themselves.”

As for the emptied pool setting: “I wanted to get the sense of being buried underground,” Houston said. “The drained pool had the same voice as the consoles — something old, fun, and almost unusable, desperate for a new lease of life.”

Artistic interpretations aside, Corrie’s use of the device is thoroughly entertaining in this two-and-a-half minute clip.

Oh, and the song’s not that bad either. Enjoy:
