Some main functional blocks of a typical oscilloscope include Signal Acquisition and Processing, Display and Touch screen control, and Power and Battery Management. The Acquisition process can be separated into three components: Acquisition, Construction and Calibration/Process. The bit processing capability of the signal chain is dependent on whether the scope is displaying the data real time, or sampled and processed. Also important are the settling time, drift and non-linearity of the signal chain.
High-Speed Bipolar Amps offer high speed at the low power. Extremely good power gain gives very high output power and full power bandwidths on the lowest quiescent power. Precision Bipolar Amps limit errors relating to offset voltage. These amps include low offset voltage and temperature drift, high open-loop gain and common-mode rejection. Precision bipolar op amps are ideal where the source impedance is low, and where voltage errors, offset voltage and drift, are crucial to accuracy. Low IB FET Amps are perfect when input impedance is very high. When low current errors are required, FET amps provide extremely low input bias current, low offset current and high input impedance. Dielectrically Isolated FET (Difet™) Amps enable the design of extremely low input leakage amplifiers by eliminating the substrate junction diode present in junction isolated processes. This yields very high-precision, low noise op amps. Difet processes also minimize parasitic capacitance and output transistor saturation effects, resulting in improved bandwidth and wider output swing. Several of the high speed, low noise amplifiers and data converters in the TI portfolio are ideal for this application. As well as a broad range of clocking solutions for various aspects of the design.
Visibility of the display is important, which is partially driven by the backlighting solution. Inductive or charge-pump- based topologies offer backlighting with a wide input voltage range. Touch screen control (TSC) is a key to making electronics both easier to use and significantly smaller since traditional controls can be removed and replaced by menu driven function selections. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) handling capability of the TSC solution is important as well. If the TSC circuit can not dissipate the energy from an ESD strike, the energy passes through to, and damages, the central microcontroller/DSP.
Use of inductive switching converters with integrated switches drives highest conversion efficiency and smallest solution size are desired. TI’s family of low-power DC/DC converters (TPS6xxxx) and SWIFT™ (TPS54xxx) point-of load step-down DC/DC converters achieve 97% peak efficiencies. Synchronous rectification not only replaces the cost of an external Schottky rectifier diode but also increases the converter efficiency by up to 10%. Fusion Digital Power™ products: Power Drivers (UCD7K) and Digital PWM Controllers (UCD9K), are well suited for applications where the desire exists for configurability, communications, diagnostics and adaptive solutions. They include both isolated and non-isolated solutions from AC line to point-of load, covering uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), server, telecom and datacom applications.
