Oscilloscopes push traditional measurement approach to new heights

Members of the Infiniium 90000 X-Series oscilloscope family offer real-time bandwidths to 32 GHz — the highest available today. Using a traditional direct-measurement approach implemented with exceptional high-performance circuitry, the four-channel scopes provide true analog hardware performance with the lowest noise (2 mV at 50 mV/div, 32 GHz) and jitter-measurement floor (~180 fs).

The units’ performance is in direct contrast with the closest competitor’s scopes, which employ DSP-boosting and frequency-domain-interleaving techniques to increase bandwidth — techniques that can result in higher noise density and signal distortions. For the 32-GHz scopes, a proprietary indium phosphide IC process was developed for low-noise/jitter, high-frequency capability. Custom aluminum nitride packaging technology combines five InP chips in the front-end multichip module, which also employs unique noise-shielding and heat-dissipation techniques.

The series’ 10 models range in bandwidth from 16 to 32 GHz, with sample rates to 80 Gsamples/s on two channels or 40 Gsamples/s on four. Trace memory is expandable from 10 Mpoints to 2 Gpoints — the deepest in the industry. Users can buy in at any bandwidth level and upgrade their unit to a higher bandwidth when needed, and the scopes offer more than 40 measurement-specific application packages, including full compliance-certification test suites. (16-GHz units, from $131,000; 32-GHz units, from $266,000 — limited qty available July.)
