For a number of years, the world has been awaiting practical pocket projectors that would let individuals carry around PowerPoint presentations or their favorite videos, and view them at a respectable size on a wall or projection screen. The holdback has been the availability of a light source that could deliver the necessary brightness and consistency. With their high-beam quality and optical outputs of 50 and 30 mW, respectively, PL 520 and PL 515 compact direct-emitting green laser diodes now let designer build useful miniature projectors for smartphones and cameras, as well as projection units for laser shows, point lasers, and line lasers.

Direct green laser diodes eliminate the need to double the frequency of an IR laser to produce green light, and can be better modulated. This is important for MEMS-based projectors, in which the color components per pixel result from the emission time of the laser diode. The laser diodes have very high beam quality, emitting an extremely narrow beam that spreads only slightly. For projectors that project the laser light with a MEMS mirror and no other optics, the size of the light point determines the image resolution. There is also no need to adjust the focus of the projection image — it is always sharp, even on curved surfaces.
