With a cooling capacity of up to 30 kW, the passive, low-maintenance Schroff-brand air/water heat exchanger can be retrofit to the door on the rear side of a Varistar server cabinet. The heat exchanger is installed inside the perforated door, which is mounted on a 200-mm-deep mounting frame fastened on the rear side of the cabinet to accommodate the cooler. This not only simplifies retrofitting but also leaves the entire cabinet volume available for the electronics, cabling, and current distribution equipment.
The condensate wall/drain and the necessary water connections are also integrated into the mounting frame, which is designed to accommodate the standard dimensions of available server cabinets. Because the cooling system does not require an additional fan or complex control electronics, overall noise levels are not increased and system maintenance is minimized.
The cooler relies on the server’s existing internal equipment fans to move warm air over the air/water heat exchanger coil, where it is cooled via water circulation and allowed to flow back into the room. A temperature-controlled valve regulates the water’s flow rate, thereby adjusting cooling capacity. Thus, heat can be discharged into the room without affecting ambient temperature.
