Philips has introduced a downloadable update for its popular Hue lighting system.
Philips has made some pretty significant updates to its popular Hue light product.
Among some of the more notable updates featured in Version 1.1, “geofencing” is the most noteworthy. It enables the multicolor Hue bulbs to automatically turn on, off, or change color when users approach or leave their home, without requiring programmed scheduling.
Geofencing provides automatic control of a user’s lighting.
That doesn’t mean the scheduling or alarm programs have gone away — they’ve actually been expanded to include a recurring alarm that will go off throughout the work week, and a new timer function that uses lighting changes to show different time intervals. This can be useful for things like telling your children to study a half-hour for their test tomorrow, putting a meal in the oven for 20 minutes, or fitting in a 15-minute workout before you leave for work in the morning.
Lighting is highly customizable with Hue 1.1.
Also worth noting about the update is the company’s recent partnership with If This Then That (IFTTT). This was done, more or less, as a means for simplifying trigger programming based on Internet-sourced data. Via nearby mobile devices, Hue bulbs can now serve to as indicators for various notifications: it can change color if it’s raining outside, blink if you have a new e-mail, change color with an update to a sports score, and more.
Philips Hue 1.1 offers a range of colors and functionality in its bulbs.
For the developers out there, Philips is also promoting its Hue open API and software developer kit, in hopes that third-party apps will be developed to further expand Hue’s features.
