Diodes Inc. has launched its PAM8907 piezoelectric sounder driver, designed to maximize the sound pressure level (SPL) from a ceramic/piezo sounder. The piezo sounder driver has a built-in synchronous boost converter, which extends SPL for a louder sound output in battery-powered systems.
The integrated boost converter operates at a typical frequency of 1.8 MHz and the output can be set to either 11 V or 15.6 V with a minimum number of external components for various applications, said the company.
The piezo sounder driver also provides a lower quiescent current for longer standby time, and an auto turn-on/off feature for an extended operating lifetime. The device is optimized for use in wireless trackers, industrial alarm systems, medical equipment, and domestic appliances.
The wide 1.8-V to 5.5-V input voltage range enables the PAM8907 to address a variety of potential applications, said Diodes. A 22-VPP or 31-VPP output value can be selected (using the GPIO), providing two different SPL options that allow for optimized performance for SPL or battery runtime. The integrated boost converter requires only a 1.0 µH external inductor, which helps reduce the bill-of-materials costs and board space.
The sounder driver also features automatic shutdown and wake-up functions to further extend its runtime when incorporated into battery-powered systems, with less than 1 μA of current drawn in shutdown mode. Protection features include thermal shutdown, overcurrent and overvoltage protection, and undervoltage lockout mechanisms. The operating temperature range is -40°C to 125°C.
The PAM8907 is supplied in a compact 10-pin U-QFN2020 package. Unit price is $0.43 in quantities of 3,000.
