The Darnell Energy Summit
The summit, which took place the week of September 9, was a never-before-tried combination of the power forum, the green-building forum, and the smart-grid forum. The event covered all the important topics for each of the sections, and ended with the release of the newest version of the PMBus standard. These type of events are important to the power and power management design engineers because they are forward looking, but also provide down-in-the-trenches detailed information. For example, Scott Barbour, Senior Vice President at Emerson Network Power, gave a thought-provoking keynote talk on “The Evolution of Energy Management,” where he opined about the need for more power that must be provided with more efficiency, be more environmentally responsible, and be supplied from microgrids that provide ac as well as dc sources.
The plenary was followed by several very insightful talks on topics such as the Enernet — an energy network that is envisioned to be the electric power corollary to the Internet, one on the challenges and opportunities of dc microgrids, another about GaN applications, and one about improving efficiency with digital power, as well as one about the smart grid impacting intelligent buildings. These sessions were the signposts of what to expect from the upcoming power technologies. Those forward-looking talks were followed by 18 technical sessions with talks by industry experts.
