Power modules target automotive traction inverters

ON Semiconductor has rolled out its first two devices in its new VE-Trac family of power modules, aimed at the automotive traction inverter market

ON Semiconductor has released the first two devices from its new VE-New LinkTrac family of power modules for high-voltage automotive traction inverters. These two power integrated modules (PIMs) target the main traction inverter of all types of electrically powered vehicles including battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and full hybrid vehicles (HEVs). The company plans to demo the two devices at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January.

As part of the new VE-Trac family are two new platforms that include the VE-Trac Dual and VE-Trac Direct. The VE-Trac Dual will consist of dual-side-cool (DSC) half-bridge modules that are stackable and scalable within a compact footprint for traction applications. The platform targets traction inverter applications ranging from 80 kW to 300 kW with minimum mechanical redesign. The first released VE-Trac Dual device is the NVG800A75L4DSC. The module is rated to 750 V at 800 A, making it double the capacity of currently available competing devices, according to the company.

The NVG800A75L4DSC is an AQG-324–qualified module with an embedded smart IGBT that provides a faster reaction time for the integrated overcurrent and overtemperature protection features. In addition, the absence of any wire bonds in the module doubles its rated lifetime, said ON Semiconductor. The company plans to release additional devices with higher voltages and various current level options in the upcoming months.

The first release for the VE-Trac Direct platform, which includes direct cooling for excellent thermal performance, is the AQG-324–qualified NVH820S75L4SPB. The device is housed in a six-pack configuration that is widely adopted by automotive OEMs and systems providers, allowing for multi-sourcing. This platform will be available in multiple power classes.

Both the VE-Trac Direct and VE-Trac Dual platforms can operate continuously at junction temperatures up to 175°C, allowing more power to be delivered in a compact modular footprint.

The new NVG800A75L4DSC-EVK and NVH820S75L4SPB-EVK VE-Trac evaluation kits, along with other vehicle electrification solutions, will be demonstrated at the ON Semiconductor booth during CES, located in the Venetian/Sands Convention Center, Murrano 3302.

Future devices in the VE-Trac family will include discrete power devices, isolated gate drivers, and expanded module solutions, as well as wide-bandgap (WBG) devices. To schedule a demo room tour, email CESEvent@onsemi.com.
