PowerPC CPU features performance, security, low cost
Based on the very-well-known Power Architecture, the PowerPC 405EX processor is optimized for the demanding requirements of 802.11n (Wi-Fi) and WiMAX-based wireless access points and similar embedded processing or network control applications. With specs like 900+ DMIPs performance, sub-2-W typical power dissipation, a hardware security engine that supports IPSec, SSL, and DTLS protocols, and a price tag of less than $17 each/10,000, this chip may find a great many applications.
The device provides dual one-lane PCI Express bus interfaces, dual GbE MACs, and 484-Mbit/s USB 2.0 On-the-Go. The E-PBGA338-packaged IC supports up to 2 Gbytes of DDR2 DRAM and has a four-channel DMA controller. It has two on-chip buses: a 128-bit 200-MHz max processor local bus (PLB) and a 100-MHz on-chip peripheral bus (OPB). An external peripheral controller supports NAND and NOR flash memory as well as slave peripheral devices.
