Print augmented reality photos that come to life in your hands

LifePrint embeds videos within prints

A picture is worth a thousand words, right? Well that’s about to change for the better. Get more out of your memories with LifePrint, a portable, wireless photo printer that allows you to print and share pictures from your smartphone — with the option to embed videos within those photos.

Designed with pocket-portability in mind, LifePrint measures 5-inches long, 3-inches wide, and 1-inch thick, while weighing in at just 7-ounces. Its internal battery charges via USB, and according to the company, a full charge lasts for 10 to 15 prints. The device uses Zink photo paper for clean, no-cartridge printing.

It’s the accompanying mobile app that uses the company’s Hyperphoto technology to offer users the option to embed video clips within their snapshots. When one views the physical print by itself, it’s an ordinary image, but when viewed through the app, it becomes an augmented reality photo that plays up to 15 seconds of video with audio.

And users can get creative with choosing videos to embed — they don’t have to be related to the image. Small watermarks can also be added in the bottom corners of printed photos to make it easy to identify which include augmented reality.

LifePrint is compatible with iPhone 5S and above, and Samsung Galaxy S5 and above, but users of the latest iPhone 6S and 6S Plus smartphones can take advantage of Apple’s new Live Photos technology. When viewing an Apple Live Photo, a long press of the picture plays a few seconds of video that starts before and after the picture was taken. With the LifePrint app, users can create a photo that’s easier to share without having to send over a digital file. If you own a GoPro, the LifePrint app can also pull images from the camera without an intermediary device.

Not only does the LifePrint app create augmented reality photos, it also provides color-correcting algorithms in order to maintain quality, editing options and filters, quick access to images and videos across multiple platforms, and a way to share these photos with anyone, anywhere.

Currently LifePrint is funding on Kickstarter, and it’s raised 301% of its $30,000 goal in 17 days. With a pledge of $159, you’ll be set with a LifePrint printer and app, a charge cable, 10 pieces of film, and a case for outdoor use. For those wanting more film, an additional $20 will buy an extra 50-pack. If all goes according to plan, backers can expect shipments of LifePrint printers to start in July 2016.
