Printed Electronics USA 2009 – Focus on E-Readers

Electronic paper and its applications will be one of the sessions at Printed Electronics USA 2009 that will stir up a lot of interest, given the rapidly growing market as well as the specific companies represented and the topics that will be covered at the event.

Printed Electronics USA 2009 is being held in San Jose on December 2 and 3. For further information please visit www.IDTechEx.com/SanJose If you register by November 20 there is a 15% earlybird discount.

E Ink

The recent acquisition of E Ink, PVI has lead to the set up of something that closely resembles a monopoly, supplying most of the currently available e-readers with their display and backplane technology. For a company that is currently at the top, the struggle takes an en entirely different form: the need for innovation remains equally important, but not with the purpose of acquiring a share of the market, the goal is to retain and augment its leadership position.

Hence, E Ink will be discussing the innovations currently developed and introduced by the company, focusing on plastic electrophoretic SURF displays that enable new, exciting applications: new form factors, performance under zero power availability etc.

Sipix

Dr Robert Sprague of Sipix Imaging will be focusing on the printed electronics integration capabilities of the company’s technology. Microcup electrophoretic displays are high contrast, flexible, reflective, and bistable and using these characteristics wisely, a large amount of products could see EPD functionality incorporated where it hasn’t been previously available. SIpix will also be focusing on the efforts to move from black & white to color displays and will be giving an overview of the company’s progress in this field.

Astak

OPEN FORMAT!! That’s what seems to be the secret of success in the e-book market according to Astak as it pursues a policy of allowing end users to buy from almost any website and offers 12-14 formats.

Mr Bob Barry, director of global business development insists that innovation and the need to be able to move quickly are important advantages for a medium-sized manufacturer.

Other than the markets, technology and competition on the field of EPDs, Mr Barry will also be addressing issues such as the environmental impact of e-paper, juxtaposing electronic book readers and printed paperback, hard covers and newspapers and the changes that are coming. What will “reading” be like 10 years from today?

Plastic Logic

Plastic Logic’s QUE proReader show why this is one of the most eagerly anticipated e-book readers, currently planned to be unveiled on January 7th 2010, at the consumer electronics show in Las Vegas. Featuring the largest touch-screen in the industry and an intuitive user interface, the QUE will be serious competition to the already successful Kindle. Competition will also move to a field other than the device itself, and that field will be title availability. The QUE partnered with Barnes & Noble, the Kindle together with Amazon, and 2010 promises to be a very interesting year for e-readers.

With 80 anticipated exhibitors and in excess of 800 attendees from around the globe, Printed Electronics/Photovoltaics USA 2009 will host the largest trade show on printed electronics in the world. The highly rated IDTechEx conference and Masterclasses (including new topics), Company Tours, Investment Summit and prestigious Printed Electronics Awards all make this event unmissable.
