Product Update:
Sockets and adapters
Today's IC and test and burn-in sockets and adapters come in many shapes and
sizes to help designers solve many prototyping, test, and burn-in problems.
Here's a look at some of the latest products
Emulator adapters for Intel microprocessor Emulator adapters are now
available for the Intel i960 family of embedded microprocessors. They
convert an i960 PGA or PLCC emulator pod into the QFP footprint of an i950
embedded microprocessor, simplifying prototyping. The adapters come in
surface-mountable, socketable, or clip-on versions. They are available for
80-, 132-, and 196-pin QFPs. (Clip-on, surface-mount, and socketable
versions: 80-pin QFP, $480; 132-pin QFP, $680; 196-pin QFP, $750–10 days

PGA socket press-fits into pc boards
The Preci-DIP PGA socket has compliant tail pins that enable the socket to
press-fit into plated-through-holes. The compliant pin design uses a hollow
slotted tail that conforms to the plated-through-hole, preventing damage. A
series of serrations forms a gas-tight connection with the tin plating of
the plated-through-hole. Compliant tail lengths come in two sizes for 0.060
to 0.100-in. or 0.090 to 0.130-in.-thick panels. The socket is available
with molded polyester insulators having grids up to 21 x 21. An ultra
low-force contact minimizes component insertion and extraction forces. (Part
#546-93-169-17-101012, 169-pin PGA socket, $9.17 ea/large qty–2 weeks ARO.)

SIMM socket has rugged design
The Advanced Latch SIMM socket has a formed spring contact and rugged
snap-in plastic latch for durability and wider board tolerances. The contact
ensures a gas-tight, low-resistance connection. A wide module-entry area
provides zero insertion force. The snap-in plastic latch has a smooth ramp
for easy module insertion. The socket is available in a standard 30-position
vertical configuration and accommodates JEDEC MO-O64 modules. The socket
body and latch are liquid-crystal polymer. ($1.35 ea/1,000–3 to 4 weeks

PGA socket accepts ASICs
An interstitial PGA socket, the series 585, accepts ASICs on 0.050 x
0.100-in. centers. Its contacts have an insertion force of just 1 oz,
compared to 2 1/2 oz or more for other sockets. The contact opening is 0.005
in., and the contact length is 0.065 in. The socket is available in 243,
293, 365, 369, 391, 447, and 545 contacts. (Typical cost, $0.09 per

Socket has pc board that increases packaging flexibility
The Correct-A-Chip socket is a two-piece socket with a pc board in the
middle. This design enables the socket to perform several functions, in a
single product, that normally require several different sockets. For
instance, the pc board can contain vias that reroute the pinouts to another
pattern. This configuration is useful where the chip and board patterns may
have the same number of pins, but different pin patterns. The socket permits
conversion between different package styles such as PLCC to PGA, SOIC to
DIP, and surface-mount to through-hole. Normally, separate adapter sockets
are required for each task. Moreover, circuit components can be placed on
the board between the mating socket halves. This allows the addition of
various ICs and discrete components to meet user needs. Aries customizes the
socket to the user's requirements with any combination of circuits, traces,
and functions. (Typical socket, $15 ea/500–4 to 6 weeks ARO.) Aries

LGA socket houses Intel 486 processor
A land-grid-array socket interfaces Intel's 486SL microprocessor, which
comes in an LGA package, to the pc board. Based on the company's CinApse
technology, the socket can be assembled to the pc board using either
conventional mounting hardware or with plastic studs integral to the socket
body. A compression spring, also integral to the socket, readily snaps open
or closed, thus permitting easy assembly or removal of the microprocessor.
An optional thermal pad aids heat dissipation. The socket stands just 0.200
in. high and comes in both the standard Intel footprint and a smaller
footprint. (From $12 to $20, depending on volume and options–4 to 6 weeks

the Series 550 and 560 MCR, respectively, have normally closed contacts that
allow for maximum wiping action at the point of contact. A pressure plate in
the socket lid prevents package damage, while support rings in both the
socket base and lid eliminate the possibility of test pads being damaged.
The sockets have an operating temperature range of -55 degrees to +150
degreesC. (Series 560 MCR, 46-mm, 256-lead socket, $105.40 ea/250; 26-mm,

Surface-mount receptacle has low profile
A three-piece, surface-mount receptacle allows access to the contact from
both the top and bottom. It is available in 0.050- or 0.079-in. centers with
up to 24 positions. Above-board height ranges from 0.039 to 0.095 in.,
depending on housing requirements. The receptacle's outer shell acts as a
protective sleeve for the contacts. This design produces the connector's
flat, low profile. It also eliminates any stress on the molded insulator.
Specifications include a maximum insertion force of 2.5-oz, 50-g normal
contact force, 5-milliohm initial contact resistance, a 0.1-A current
rating, and 0.018-in. mating pin size. (About $0.05 per position/large
