Programmable buck regulators support green standards for multimedia

The SMB20X programmable power manager (PPM) features integrated circuits that bring sophisticated digital power control and programmability to consumer applications. The device family supports advanced power management for green and EnergyStar applications, including digital LCD/LED televisions, cable/satellite/IP set-top boxes, and other multimedia, broadband and small-office-home-office communications equipment.

The family members include the SMB207/207A/208/208A/209/209A single- and dual-output integrated dc/dc buck regulators. With a serial digital interface and on-board non-volatile memory, the power manager family can be configured during development and re-programmed in system by host software. The device integrates a single or dual step-down dc/dc buck regulator with on-board high-side MOSFET(s) supplying up to 1-A + 1-A (SMB207), 2-A + 2-A (SMB208) or 4-A (SMB209) output currents. The input voltage range is +4.5 to +16 V and output voltage range is +0.8 to +5.0 V. It is accurate to 2.5% over load/line/temperature. The output voltage is programmable in either 100-mV steps (SMB207/208/209) or ~10-mV steps (SMB207A/208A/209A). The switching frequency is programmable to 500 kHz or 1 MHz with 180 phase interleave for SMB207/208. Light load efficiency is supported by automatic pulse-skipping operation. The rated operating temperature range is -40 to +85C. (Ea/10,000; SMB207, $1.00; SMB208A/209A, $1.40 – available now.)
