Quad-core version of communication processor takes only 15 W

The P4040 four-core version of Freescale’s flagship QorIQ CPU provides high-performance networking and communication processing in a sub-15-W power envelope. The chip is pin- and code-compatible with the P4080 and has a sleep mode that cuts its already low power by 35%.

The processors’s quad cores run at 1.5 GHz, and each has a 128-Kbyte L2 backside cache and access to a 2-Mbyte shared frontside L3 cache. The device has triple 5-GHz PCIe, dual SRIO, and dual 64-bit DDR2/DDR3 memory controllers and coprocessors for packet parsing and classification, queue management, and security. It also features two 10-Gbit Ethernet (XAUI) and eight 1-Gbit Ethernet (SGMII) controllers. The processor is designed for combined control and dataplane processing.
