Raspberry Pi Dynamic Bicycle Headlight

A bicycle that shows the rider’s speed

Matt Richardson made some improvements on his bike in order to make bike riding in the city much easier and more fun. Using a Raspberry Pi, a minicomputer mainly used for educational purposes, Richardson created the Raspberry Pi Dynamic Bicycle Headlight, a headlight that can project the rider’s speed onto the pavement ahead of the bike. Mounted on the handlebars is a small projector, connected to the Raspberry Pi via HDMI cable, and both devices are powered by a USB battery pack. Although the projector only shows the speed of the rider, Richardson hopes in the near future to enhance it with more features, such as GPS animations and the ability to change the light colors. How was Richardson able to project information through a light beam? Well, he hooked a Hall Effect sensor near the back wheel and attached a small magnet to the wheel itself. With all of this, the Hall Effect sensor records the amount of times the wheel rotates. To see the prototype of the Raspberry Pi Dynamic Bicycle Headlight check out this video.
