At long, long last, the US military is finally set to unveil a prototype of its TALOS (Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit) armor later this month—which means, later this month the military will have essentially made Iron Man real.
Similar too—or exactly the same, really—the fictional Tony Stark’s fictional armor, the real-life TALOS armor is designed to protect its wearer from bullets, convey information regarding their environment through a system of sensors, cameras, and advanced displays, and assist in lifting very heavy loads.
The suit was developed through RDECOM (the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command) collaboration with several other companies, including a special operations market group at Battelle.
The TALOS prototype will become available sometime during the end of this month, with a complete or updated version planned for debut between 2016 and 2018. As the month is nearly complete, we should see how well the suit actually performs fairly soon.
Battelle, a non-profit. is also helping to develop other technologies to help soldiers, including a de-icing aircraft coating—which will hopefully be on the TALOS suit if they ever give it flight capabilities—digital heads-up displays, and even underwater robot vehicles. Some of these innovations were displayed this month in Tampa, Florida, during a U.S. Special Forces industry conference.
