So, RoboCop. I’m assuming that even if you haven’t seen the movie, you can at least guess what it is. Unfortunately for you robot fans (but perhaps fortunately for the human race), we’re still quite a-ways from creating an animatronic cop capable of patrolling our streets on its own. That does not, however, mean that we can’t put some of the technology we’ve seen brought to life in the RoboCop movies to good use.
Certainly LOOKS alot like RoboCop
Meet Telebot, a Florida International University Discovery Lab darling. A team of undergrads crafted this six-foot, 75-pound robot from scratch, as a prototype partner for disabled police or military officers. The prototype is only in existence because of U.S. Navy lieutenant Jeremy Robins, who donated $20,000 to the project. Robins and the team are both hopeful that Telebot can help disabled veterans get back into the field, with its intriguing combination of telepresence and advanced robotics.
Using an Oculus Rift headset, a motion-tracking vest, arm bands and gloves, all hooked up to a remote person who can both view a live feed of the prototype’s field of vision and relay movements to the bot’s body and hands.
At the moment Telebot is still only a prototype, and the team still wants to fine-tune a few details.
“Our next step is to fabricate the external shell of ther obot and to tune up the software,” said associate professor of FIU School of Computing and Information Sciences Nagarajan Prabakar, on Mashable. After all that is done, the bot should hopefully be field-tested. We’ll be waiting.
