Real-time oscilloscope is first to reach 100-GHz milestone

The LabMaster 10-100Zi oscilloscope is the first commercially available instrument that lets engineers see and capture 100 GHz signals in real time. As such it opens the door for development of the next generation of high-speed communications systems, from basic research to the communication backbone to consumer devices. The unit, which can record 240 Gsamples/s into acquisition memory of up to 1,536 Mpoints, was recently used by Alcatel-Lucent to demonstrate the highest-bandwidth coherent optical receiver, which can detect a 160-Gbaud QPSK signal.

Available now at a starting price of $900,000, the basic scope can operate as a single, 100-GHz-channel instrument, as a one-65-GHz/two-36-GHz- channel unit, or as a four-36-GHz-channel system. Using the architecture seen in previous LabMaster 10 Zi oscilloscopes, the basic scope consists of a LabMaster 10-100Zi acquisition unit and a LabMaster Master Control Module (MCM-Zi) that contains the display, control, and ChannelSync clock distribution architecture, all managed by a server-class CPU. Users can connect up to 20 LabMaster 10-100Zi acquisition modules to the MCM-Zi.
