Reddit, the social forum for an array of topics ranging anywhere from tech to pets to hobbies, officially released an app for both iOS and Android. For years, fans of the service have relied on Alien Blue, an app built by an avid user as a way to browse on an iPhone or iPad. In fall of 2014, Reddit purchased Alien Blue and then pulled it from the App Store in February 2016.
Now, the company is replacing Alien Blue with an official Reddit app that boasts colorfulness and simplicity. Reddit said it had initially planned to renovate Alien Blue, but found that the project was too big to take on and decided it made more sense to start from scratch. The company hopes the new app will give users a fresh way to use the site.
Reddit’s official app lets users browse, update, and view the site through customized themes in either day or night mode for reading. It has clear menus that show users’ subreddit subscriptions and account settings. For those looking to get the app right away, the site is offering three months of the Reddit gold premium membership to those who sign up during the launch week. The company plans on maintaining advertising on its mobile app for free users.
For Alien Blue loyalists, the app will linger around for those who already have it downloaded on their devices and wish to stick with it. But for those who don’t already have it, it will no longer be available for new users.
