Schurter Inc. has expanded its reflowable thermal switch (RTS) family with a new version that is designed to trip at >175°C, in addition to the existing variant set to trip at >210°C. Designed to protect power semiconductors such as MOSFETs, IGBTs, Triacs and SCRs, the compact thermal SMD fuse precisely interrupts a circuit at a pre-defined temperature. These devices can be used in a range of automotive and industrial applications.
The reflowable thermal switch protects integrated power semiconductors used in dense circuits from overheating and thermal runaway conditions, while it sustains operating currents up to 130 A at rated voltages of up to 60 VDC. The RTS also provides a breaking capacity up to 400 A at 24 VDC.
The RTS, which measures 6.6 × 8.8 mm, is mounted using conventional reflow solder processes with temperature profiles up to 260°C. It is mechanically armed by depressing the top and its status is clearly visible to the installer, said Schurter.
The protection device is available with or without an added shunt functionality in the same package dimensions. It meets AEC-Q200 and MIL-STD requirements.
The devices are available in packages of 100 pieces or 750 pieces in blister tape and 33-cm reel. Pricing starts at $2.33 each in quantities of 100 pieces. Resources include a datasheet, a video demonstrating reflow and mechanical arming of the device, and an application note.
