Renesas adds three families of motor control MCUs

Three new MCU groups across the Renesas RA and RX families join the company’s broad motor control offerings.

Renesas Electronics Inc. has announced a new motor-control portfolio with three new microcontroller (MCU) groups targeting motor control applications. The RA4T1 Group, RA6T3 Group and RX26T Group MCUs add more than 35 new products, with devices from both the RX and RA families. The portfolio includes multiple MCU and MPU families, analog and power solutions, sensors, communications devices and signal conditioners. Target motor control applications include home appliance, industrial equipment and building/office automation.

Features of the RA4T1 Group of MCUs include a 100-MHz Arm Cortex-M33 CPU core with TrustZone, flash memory options from 128 KB to 256 KB, 40-KB SRAM, integrated trigonometric function units (TFUs) for acceleration and advanced analog functions, including a 12-bit ADC, programmable gain amplifier, comparator and 12-bit DAC.

The RA6T3 Group features include a 200-MHz Arm Cortex-M33 CPU core with TrustZone, 256-KB flash memory, 40-KB SRAM, advanced analog functions including a 12-bit ADC, programmable gain amplifier, comparator and 12-bit DAC and integrated communications options including USB 2.0 Full-Speed Device, CAN FD, I3C, SCI and SPI interfaces.

The RA4T1 and RA6T3 parts are supported by the Renesas Flexible Software Package (FSP) for easy porting of designs from other RA family devices.

In the RX segment, Renesas is delivering new RX26T Group MCUs that operate at 120 MHz with up to 512 KB of flash memory and 64-KB SRAM. The MCUs support 5-V power supplies, featuring high noise immunity and control accuracy and include TFUs, on-chip timing and interrupt control. Customers using RX24T MCUs can scale their designs to the new RX26T products using existing design software while achieving performance and control efficiency improvements.

Renesas offers several Winning Combinations references designs for the new MCUs, including a High Power, Compact BLDC Motor Control design that features the RA4T1 MCU with an RAA227063 smart gate driver IC to control 3-phase sensorless BLDC motors and a Digital Power Conversion with Totem Pole Interleaved PFC, using a RX26T MCU, RAA223011 700-V AC/DC regulator and other components. An E-bike System Solution combines the RA6T3 MCU with power and BMS devices to provide a complete solution for virtually any kind of E-bike.

Support tools include Renesas’ Flexible Motor Control development kit for the evaluation of motor control using permanent magnet synchronous motors and the Renesas Motor Workbench development tool. The new MCUs and associated development kits are currently available from Renesas and authorized distributors. Both the RA4T1 Group and the RA6T3 Group feature 32- to 64-pin package options.
