Renesas claims first 60-W wireless power receiver IC

Renesas’ single-chip P9418 wireless power receiver IC delivers faster wireless charging for smartphones, laptops, and notebook devices.

Renesas Electronics Corp. has claimed the industry’s first 60-W wireless power receiver IC, the P9418. Claiming the highest power density solution for faster wireless charging in smartphones, laptops, and notebook devices, this highly integrated device, featuring the company’s WattShare technology, delivers up to 60 W in a single chip.

Renesas P9418 wireless chargingThe P9418 wireless power transmitter/receiver IC (TRx) can be configured to transmit or receive an AC power signal through magnetic induction, said Renesas.

When configured as a wireless power transmitter, it uses an on-chip full/half-bridge inverter, a PWM generator, a modulator/demodulator for communication, and microcontroller to produce an AC power signal to drive the external L-C tank. As a receiver, the device receives an AC power signal from a wireless transmitter and converts it into rectified output voltage, which can be used to power devices or supply the charger input in mobile applications, said Renesas. The device integrates a synchronous full bridge rectifier and control circuitry to optimize power delivery as well as over-temperature and voltage protection.

The wireless power receiver features an embedded 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0 processor, MTP non-volatile memory for firmware and device function updates, and offers up to 10-W Tx capability in WattShare (TRx) mode. Other features include advanced telemetry and proprietary charging protocols needed for high-power applications as well as bi-directional communications to support proprietary authentication with encryption. It supports I2C 400 kHz standard interface and GPIOs.

The P9418 builds on the previous generation P9415 wireless power receiver and provides an upgrade path for existing customers. The device can be used with Renesas’ power management portfolio, including its USB Type-C power delivery and battery charging solutions, to speed up development.

Housed in an ultra-small 70-WLCSP package, the P9418 60-W transmitter/receiver IC is available now. For more information, visit Renesas’ 3D virtual experience at CES 2021.
