Fourth-quarter mobile phone report from comScore yields other interesting results
A recent report by the digital world’s measuring stick, comScore, indicates that when it comes to mobile operating systems, Google’s Android is still number one.

The comScore MobiLens report, which surveyed over 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers, yields plenty of other interesting results, including preferred platform (Samsung) and top mobile habits (still text messaging).

Operating systems
For its fourth-quarter 2011 U.S. smartphone market share study, comScore compared the three-months ending in December 2011 to the previous three months ending in September 2011.
Both Google and Apple saw an increase in market share for their operating systems, Android and iOS, respectively, with Google eclipsing the 47% mark and Apple inching closer to the 30th percentile.

Platforms
What’s interesting about this particular part of the study is not how little changed across all six months — Samsung still holds a commanding 5% lead — but more so the fact that Apple was able to gain 2.2% ground in the past three months despite having only three phones on the market.

Usage
As smartphones become more prevalent, these numbers will continue to grow. Note the big jumps in app usage, web browsing, and social networking, though. It seems like everyone is aware of this developing trend in user behavior, but it’s interesting to see actual numbers backing it up.
