Yes indeed, resistors and capacitors continue to advance, though not quite at the pace of microprocessors, memory, and other semiconductors. Below we have a six good examples of very interesting recently introduced components.
Precision resistor pair is AEC-Q200 qualified
The MPMA precision matched-pair resistor network from Vishay Intertechnology (www.vishay.com) is automotive AEC-Q200 qualified and features tight ratio tolerance to ±0.05% and close TCR tracking of ± 2 ppm/°C. The SOT-23 packaged network is specified for –55° to 155°C operation and has a resistance range from 250 Ω to 50 kΩ, with divider ratios from 1:1 to 50:1.

Power shunt provides enhanced absorption of thermal expansion
The PSB shunt resistor from KOA Speer Electronics' (www.koaspeer.com) offers a high power rating of 6 W, low resistances of 0.75 and 1 mΩ, and a tolerance of 1%. It allows for enhanced absorption of thermal expansion.
The PSB shunt resistor from KOA Speer
Due to its special 0.2mm-thick Cu electrode shape, PSB resistors feature excellent temperature cycling characteristics and has a low 0.65 mm height. The have a TCR of ±75 ppm and feature high resistance to solder cracking and a smooth current flow ideal for large current detecting. PSB Power Shunts cost about $1.78 in 1,000 quantity.
High capacitance monolithic ceramic capacitor
The GCJ32EL81E106K version of the GCJ series of monolithic ceramic capacitors from Murata Manufacturing (www.murata.com) has a resin external electrode and features X8L characteristics and operation up to 150°C. The device comes in a 3225 package and has a capacitance value of 10 µF and a rated voltage 25 V. The resin absorbs mechanical stress when a circuit board is bent.

New true fail open tantalum capacitor
The T496 hi-rel fused COTS MnO2 series tantalum surface mount capacitors from KEMET (www.kemet.com) protects from short circuit conditions. These devices target high reliability applications where a capacitor failing short cannot be tolerated. The internal fuse in the capacitor results in a fail open condition.

Fuse activation will occur (at room temperature 25˚C) within 1 second at fault currents of 4 amps and higher. The series is available in DLA (DSCC) Drawing 04053 and can be ordered with a variety of options including surge current testing, Weibull Grading, termination options, and various ESR levels. A customizable testing and screening protocol is available upon customer request. These devices range in price from $0.50.
Ceramic high voltage bulk capacitance solution
The KPS high voltage series from Kemet (www.kemet.com) has an X7R dielectric and is said to offer the highest capacitance/voltage combinations in the Industry. They use a proprietary lead-frame technology to vertically stack two MLC capacitors into a compact surface mount package. The devices are available in rated voltages of 500 VDC and 630 VDC and have low ESR and ESL properties and an operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C.
The KPS high voltage ceramic capcitor
The KPS devices provide superior flex performance over traditional surface mount MLCCs with board flex capability up to 10 mm. They meet the demanding automotive AEC-Q200 qualification requirements. A 4.7UF 50V device costs around $1.29 in 1,000 quantity.
