Retimers target USB-C/DP devices

Diodes Inc. introduces two retimers with adaptive equalization and bidirectional capabilities for USB-C/DisplayPort devices.

Diodes Inc. has released two bit-level retimers with adaptive equalization and bidirectional capabilities for USB-C/DisplayPort (DP) devices. The new PI2DPT1021 and PI2DPT821 devices can be used in laptops, desktop PCs, docking stations, computer peripherals, game consoles, and active cables.

The retimers address both long trace and short trace applications thanks to receiver adaptive equalization. “This function enables channel loss compensation up to -23 dB for signal transmissions at 5-GHz speeds and -18 dB for 4.05-GHz speeds plus jitter cleaning, without the need for a local reference clock,” said Diodes.
The PI2DPT1021 supports 10 Gbits/s USB3.2 Gen2 and DP version 1.4, while the PI2DPT821 supports 8.1 Gbits/s DP1.4 and USB3.2 Gen1 protocols. Both devices feature a bidirectional, high-speed channel, which allows the flow from downstream facing ports (DFP) and upstream facing ports (UFP) to be swapped, delivering greater layout flexibility, said the company.

The bidirectional operation also makes both retimer ICs suited for active cable implementations since both of their end connectors are the same and can act as either a DFP or UFP accordingly, said the company.

Other features include ultra-low latency from signal input to output (<1 ns), a wide temperature range of 40°C to 85°C), and an I2C programming interface. They also offer automatic power saving modes for both USB and DP.

The retimers are housed in 32-pin QFN packages, measuring 2.85 × 4.5 × 0.45 mm. These devices are priced at $1.65 and $1.28, respectively, both in quantities of 5,000.
