RMS detector provides 40-dB dynamic range

The LT5581 broadband rms detector features a dynamic range of 40 dB, a supply current of 1.4 mA at 3.3 V, and a frequency range from 10 MHz to 6 GHz. It outputs a dc voltage that is linearly proportional to the log input power, providing an easy-to-use mV/dB scaling with a linearity of better than ±1 dB across a 40-dB range.

The part’s rms measurement capability provides accurate RF power readings to within ±0.2 dB regardless of waveforms that have high crest-factor modulated content, multicarrier or multitone. Housed in an 8-lead DFN surface-mount package, the part features a response time of 1-μs rise time to a full power swing, a typical shutdown current of 0.2 μA, and an operating temperature range of 40° to 85°C.
