Robot Arm can catch objects in mid-air

EPFL robot arm taught by humans can catch thrown objects

If robot baseball were a thing—oh, somebody please look into that, that sounds amazing—you’d definitely want this robot arm developed by EPFL researchers on the team. This particular arm is capable of reacting in less than five hundredths of a second in order to catch seemingly any object in the air, and it never really seems to miss.

Robot Arm Catching Stuff

Unlike other robot arms, the EPFL invention does not require hours and hours of programming and code in order to make a catch—instead, the arm is moved in real time, by a human who teaches the bot how to catch the thrown object. Once us puny humans have taught it the basics, the arm uses its camera-based tracking systems to follow the course of the throw, suitably fine-tuning its movements so it safely catches the object.

So, in other words, it learns. Take a look at its prowess in the video below:

With its high-speed reflexes and learning capabilities, the technology in this robotic arm could be utilized for everything from factory work to cars to sports—it’s lightning-fast reflexes could definitely be used for all types of accident prevention.

Personally, I’m still really feeling robot baseball.
