A new robotic device by iRobot ameliorates safety and awareness in the military, by specializing in surveillance. Remote-controlled robots have been increasingly used in militaristic operations during combat duties, scouting out bombs, and helping during hostage situations. iRobot 100 Firstlook is set to scout out potentially dangerous situations, while keeping the people abreast on all angles of the situation, since it is equipped with four specialized embedded cameras. The above video portrays the iRobot in action. It gets dropped into a building, moves swiftly about, then disarms a seemingly hazardous bomb-like device.
The included IR illuminators enable night-vision capabilities. The two-way audio communication is also helpful when a perceived threat approaches. The iRobot 110 Firstlook can successfully maneuver itself over any terrain, and climb stairs.
The 5-lb device has a battery life of 6 hours, and can broadcast up to 10 hours in live video. The iRobot 110 Firstlook has an arm attachment that can lift 3 lbs of equipment.
The robot is multifaceted, for it can make it through treacherous situations. It is waterproof, and can detect forthcoming gases, chem-bio-radiation sensors, and extreme gases that could asphyxiate an entire military base.
The digital mesh networking capabilities allow the FirstLook robot to transmit messages over long distances. The Line of Sight and Non-Line of Sight capabilities are increased with digital mesh networking. The touchscreen operator control unit (OCU) that includes a radio, which allows the user to control the robot from afar.
