Rotary position sensors enable high accuracy positioning of automotive robots

Newtek’s RV series rotary position sensors enable the accurate positioning of industrial robots in automotive assembly plants.

Newtek Sensor Solutions has launched its RV series of rotary position sensors that provides accurate angular displacement measurements for the correct positioning of robotic arms in a wide range of applications in automotive assembly plants. These include factory robots that pick and place heavy equipment such as doors, engines, windshields, and motors; perform arc and spot welding in attaching chassis components on an assembly line, and paint, seal, and coat automotive bodies.

The rotary position sensors, with a shaft that rotates 360° with no stops, measure shaft angle position over a nominal range of ±30°. Non-contact measurement also offers greater accuracy in measurement feedback, said the company.

The sensors offer an operating temperature range of -65°F to 221°F (-55 to 105°C), which is said to ensure long-term reliability in the hot environments found in automotive production. Without internal components to wear or degrade, the RVDT technology offers long mechanical life even in the harsh, wet, and dirty locations of automotive assembly, said Newtek, and operate with higher accuracy and longevity in areas with high temperature, vibration, and shock.

The RV series is available in two diameter sizes: size 8 (0.75”) and size 11 (1.06”). The AC-operated sensors require external excitation and use the NewTek NTC-6000 LVDT signal conditioner to power the sensors while converting the position output into 4-20 mA, 0-5 V, 0-10 V, or RS-485 format for robotic control systems.
