RTCCs feature battery switchover, digital trimming
The MCP79409 real-time clock/calendar (RTCC) offers 64 bytes of SRAM, battery switchover and timestamp for accurate timekeeping, and digital trimming for time-of-day calibration. Starting at $0.57 for 10,000 quantities, the device offers a lower-cost alternative to the existing MCP7941X devices, which feature 1 kbit of EEPROM memory and a 64-bit reprogrammable unique ID.
Its digital-trimming feature supports software temperature compensation, which lowers costs in comparison. The device targets smart-energy, home-appliance, automotive, and consumer-electronic markets. For communication, it uses the I2 C bus. The supply voltage (Vcc) is between 1.8 to 5.5 V, but can operate down to 1.3 V for timekeeping and SRAM retention only. Using the programmable CLKOUT, frequencies of 32.768, 8,192, and 4.096 kHz and 1 Hz can be generated from the external crystal. It is housed in SOIC, MSOP, TSOP, and TDFN packages. (Ea/10,000: SOIC, $0.57; MSOP/TSOP, $0.60; 2 x 3 mm TDFN, $0.64 — available now.)
