Samsung Electronics LCD Business: Color LCD is transparently unique

The transformation of the computer/television display from cathode-ray tube to solid-state device has brought many new attributes to viewing technology; larger and thinner screens, more detailed and colorful images, and better and more varied touch control. But now a new LCD technology has created a display characteristic never before seen in this space: transparency. At the same time, the display is actually more friendly to the environment than previous devices.

The Samsung Transparent Color Liquid Crystal Display Panel lets viewers see through a vivid-color, high-definition still or video to whatever is behind it, and to interact with the display through a transparent touch screen. Initially available in a 22-in. size, larger versions, to 46 in., are also available now. Due to its light weight, the panel is easy to attach to other glass surfaces. Another bonus of the design is that the panel uses only about 90% of the power consumed by conventional backlit LCD panels, allowing it to operate wirelessly on solar-replenished battery power.

In addition to notebook PCs, it is expected that the transparent display will be used in a variety of new applications, such as on coolers or commercial freezers in supermarkets, on vending machines, in various touch-accessed retail storefront showcase applications, for “smart” windows in homes or offices, or as interfaces to interactive museum displays. In reality, potential applications for this new technology are only limited by the designer’s imagination.
