Samsung files patent for Glasses-based, AR keyboard that projects onto one’s palms

It’s long been rumored that Samsung is working on its own set of smart glasses to rival Google Glass product, and now with news of this patent having been filed, it appears that these hearsay reports have some truth to them.

The patent details a camera-based, augmented-reality keyboard that would project on to the user’s hands. It’s meant to serve as an alternative resource for when the system’s speech recognition-based controls cannot run due to noisy environments, or the user wants to type something with a bit of privacy. 

The technology is officially referred to as “Input Method and Apparatus of Portable Device” and it will enable users to see an augmented reality keyboard (via the glasses only; that is, it does not project outward for everyone to see) mapped out on their fingers and palms, which can be used to type out a message using one’s thumbs. 

The patent was filed last year at the World Intellectual Property Organization and South Korea’s Korean Intellectual Property Office. Since the rumors now have some weight to them, word on the interwebs is that Samsung will officially unveil “Galaxy Glass” in September at the IFA trade show in Berlin.
