Samsung Galaxy S5 takes ALS ice bucket challenge, possible sales tactic

If you’ve glanced at any of your social media news feeds recently you have probably been exposed to one or 1,000 ALS Ice Bucket Challenges.

Samsung Ice Bucket
ALS, sometimes called “Lou Gehrig's Disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord and people are dumping buckets of ice water on their heads to raise awareness as well as donations for the disease.

Samsung took this as an opportunity to show off its newest waterproofing feature and had the Galaxy S5 participate in the challenge.

Watch the smartphone take the challenge in the quick video clip below. This latest video was posted to Samsung’s Mobile UK YouTube channel.

As a possible insult to other cellphone makers, the Galaxy S5 then challenges the iPhone 5s, HTC One M8, and the Nokia Lumia 930 to take the challenge even though they do not possess the waterproofing feature.

The Galaxy S5 comes with IP67 certification waterproofing features that allows for the device to be submerged in up to three feet of water for 30 minutes. The HTC One M8 and Nokia phones advertise water resistance features, but do not include complete waterproofing like the Galaxy S5. The iPhone does not include waterproofing features at all.

Samsung Mobile UK then made a generous donation to the Motor Neurone Disease Association, the UK’s equivalent of the American ALS Association.
