Samsung’s Galaxy S5 phones to come with $500 worth of apps

Flagship device to be outfitted with all the bells and whistles

In an effort to entice those on the fence about purchasing the Galaxy S5 phone, Samsung has announced that the company’s flagship device will be outfitted with more than $500 worth of premium app subscriptions and services.

Galaxy S5

Officially referred to as “Samsung Galaxy Gifts,” the apps will include long-term subscriptions to fitness, productivity, and lifestyle apps, as well as premium upgrades and subscriptions to news services like The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg Businessweek.

Altogether, the apps on Samsung’s Galaxy S5 phone will be worth $576. The most valuable will be the aforementioned subscription to The Wall Street Journal ($160 for six months), LinkedIn Premium ($75 for three months), and 50 Gbytes of store on Box ($60 for six months).

Additional services:
A year of Lark's premium service (which uses the S5's heart-rate-monitoring capabilities)
A year of Run Keeper's elite membership
Six months of premium membership to Map My Run and Skimble
Three months of Evernote premium
Three months of 1 Tbyte of cloud storage from Bitcasa
More than $50 in perks from PayPal when shopping from participating retailers

It’s a nice “Thanks for spending an arm and a leg on our device” package, but it’s also not the first time Samsung’s done something like this. They’ve bundled apps and services in a similar promotion for their Galaxy Note 3 handset and Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet devices.

No word on whether users will have to provide their billing information up front in order to access these trial subscriptions, nor was there any sort of clarification on if users will have their services automatically renewed once the trial runs out.
