It is important to note that the protocol analyzer selected should provide a nonintrusive method of capturing the communications path under investigation. Other key features to look for include the following:

- English language decoding of information for every level of the protocol
- User-extendable decoding capabilities for proprietary fields or unique layers
- Simple to use and easy to understand graphical user interfaces
- Ability to “scatter gather” information from one level of the protocol to the next to provide a logical view of the information
- Extensive searching capabilities that eliminate blind searches–this means that the analyzer should present items and conditions that actually exist within the recording
- Easy-to-navigate reporting systems that provide the ability to quickly identify areas of interest and allow the user to instantly view that area of the recording
- Ability to cross-trigger with other test equipment as well as importing and exporting information to other tools in real time.
