Shunt battery IC charges Li-ion batteries

The LTC4070 shunt battery IC charges Li-ion/polymer batteries and features a 450-nA operating current. It charges and protects batteries from previously unusable low current, intermittent or continuous charging sources. The charge current can be boosted from 50 to 500 mA with the addition of an external PMOS shunt device. It features pin-selectable settings of 4.0, 4.1, or 4.2 V, and has a 1% accurate battery float voltage.

The IC has an internal thermal battery conditioner that reduces the float voltage. Multiple-cell battery stacks can be charged and balanced by configuring several ICs in series. The device is suited for continuous and intermittent, lower-power charging source applications, including Li-ion/polymer battery backup, thin-film and coin-cell batteries, backup for memory and solar-powered systems, embedded automotive and energy harvesting.
