Rohm Semiconductor has unveiled three new products in the PMR100 series of standard metal-plate shunt resistors. These new models offer a rated power of 5 W and resistance values of 0.5 mΩ, 1.0 mΩ and 1.5 mΩ in the 2512/6432 size. Applications include motor control and power circuits in automotive, consumer and industrial equipment.
Shunt resistors for current detection provide power supply overcurrent protection and battery level detection. For power savings, precise circuit control with high accuracy, high reliability shunt resistors are needed, the company said, and as application functionality increases, boards become denser, requiring smaller and higher power shunt resistors.
The three new models deliver a rated power of 5 W thanks to new materials with excellent temperature characteristics and terminal temperature derating, Rohm said. The company claims they are best-in-class for the 6432-size flat chip types with protective film and achieve 2.5× higher rated power than conventional PMR100 2-W products and 1.7× higher than 3-W models.
A rated terminal temperature of 130°C (for 0.5 mΩ and 1mΩ products) and an operating temperature range from -65°C to 175°C are guaranteed, providing stability in extreme temperature environments. A temperature coefficient of resistance of ±75 ppm/°C also enables reliable, high accuracy current detection.
The PMR series are the most used metal-plate resistors among Rohm’s shunt resistor lineup. Sizes range from 0402 (0.04 × 0.02 inch) / 1005 size (1.0 × 0.5 mm) to 2512 (0.25 × 0.12 inch) / 6432 size (6.4 × 3.2 mm). Rohm uses a proprietary trimless structure that suppresses rise in product temperature caused by localized current concentration. The result is a wider distance between electrodes, improving the ease of pattern design even with resistances as low as 0.5 mΩ, the company said.
The series (PMR100HZP7FV1L00) is now available. Rohm plans to add other resistance values as needed.
