Single-chip platform provides fast, low-power ZigBee solution

Platform-in-package reduces component count and system cost

Integrating the essential components of a ZigBee application within a single 9.5 x 9.5-mm land-grid-array or 7 x 7-mm QFN package, the MC1322x platform-in-package claims to have the industry’s lowest power consumption and highest performance. The device has a 32-bit MCU, a fully compliant IEEE 802.15.4 transceiver, and RF matching components.

The chip’s proprietary TurboLink mode boosts the data rate up to 2 Mbits/s, and the device can switch automatically between the 802.15.4 protocol (250 Kbits/s) and TurboLink packets, allowing high-speed capabilities, while simultaneously controlling and monitoring a ZigBee mesh network. The part needs only 20 mA in full 0 dB transmit/receive operation and has a sensitivity of <95 dBm.

The device features hardware security acceleration, a buck converter, dual 12-bit A/D converters, multiple serial ports, a ROM with device drivers and a MAC, and RAM and flash memory. Only an antenna and crystal must be added. (From $5.50 ea/10,000samples in May.)
