Single-chip processor/transceiver combination features low power
Allows wireless networking applications that operate without servicing for 10 years
The flexible CC430 is a combination of a MSP430F5xx MCU and a low-power RF transceiver that draws a small enough current to enable battery-operated, intermittent operation, wireless networking applications that need no servicing for 10 years or more. The monolithic devices come in a small 9.1 x 9.1-mm package, and the processor takes just 1.3 mA at 8 MHz, 1.7 µA in standby, and 0.1 µA in shutdown.
The chip operates in the ISM and SRD frequency bands at 315, 433, 868, and 915 MHz, and can easily be programmed for operation at other frequencies in the 300 to 348-, 387 to 464-, and 779-928-MHz bands. In transmit mode at 0 dBm, the chip takes 17 mA and in receive it takes 21 mA typ. The chip’s modem has a configurable data rate of up to 500 Kbaud.
The processors peripheral set include a 16-bit A/D converter, low-power comparator, Advanced Encryption Standard accelerator, 16-bit timers, and I2C ports. ($2 ea/high volume — preliminary samples 1st qtr 2009.)
