Six-core Opteron CPUs raise performance/watt

The Opteron Model 84xx and 24xx server processors (code-named Istanbul) feature six-cores with Direct Connect Architecture and up to 34% more performance/watt over the previous generation quad-core ICs. The CPUs use low-power DDR2 memory, run from 1.30-V supplies, and take 75 W.

High-performance computing, virtualization, and database workloads benefit from the device’s increased 4P STREAM memory bandwidth of up to 60% enabled by HyperTransport technology HT Assist, which helps reduce processor-to-processor latency and traffic. The 2400 series accommodates two-socket servers, while the 8400 series are for four- and eight-socket systems. ($455 to $2,649 available now.)
