That’s right — you’d have to go all the way back to 1983 to see the first introduction of a coin cell battery holder being made for general PCB placement. The company that invented and patented the device — Memory Protection Devices (MPD).
Since that first model was used, there have been plenty more designs, all of which were done for the purpose of modernizing and improving upon the technology so as to better accommodate the increasingly smaller gadgets flooding the market.
If you’re unfamiliar with the technology, the holders are used to secure the coin cell battery itself to the device’s board, but without taking up too much space. Snap Dragon Coin Cell Holders
The Snap Dragon is a specially designed coin cell holder that is designed to increase the reliability of open top coin cell holders vis-à-vis its snap-on cover piece. The Snap Dragon is perhaps the easiest battery holder to install or replace on the market today.
