6-MHz step-down dc/dc converter achieves 89% efficiency

The TPS62601 6-MHz, 500-mA step-down dc/dc converter is the industry’s first to achieve a 13-mm2 solution size with a 0.6-mm height, The converter achieves up to 89% power efficiency and has 30-µA typ operating quiescent current in a 0.9 x 1.3-mm chip-scale package, roughly the size of a flake of ground pepper.

The device targets space-constrained applications including memory modules, GPS modules, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules, or other wireless micro-modules used in ultra-thin smart phones, digital still cameras, portable disk drives and media players. The synchronous, switch-mode device’s fixed frequency device enables the use of a low-profile, 0.47-µH inductor and two low-cost ceramic capacitors.

The converter can deliver ±1.5% dc-voltage regulation accuracy. It has a 2.3 to 5.5-V input voltage range and a 1.8-V of output to support single-rail voltage requirements. The converter automatically enters a power save mode during light-load operating conditions via an automatic pulse frequency modulation and pulse-width-modulation switching feature. In shutdown mode, the device’s current consumption is reduced to less than 1 µA. ($1.45 ea/1,000 available now.)
