Smallest 6-A 17-V step-down dc/dc converter targets telecom apps

Smallest 6-A 17-V step-down dc/dc converter targets telecom apps

An addition to the company’s SWIFT dc/dc converter series, the TPS54620 is offered as the industry’s smallest single-chip 6-A 17-V step-down synchronous switcher with integrated FETs. It is 60% smaller than current multichip converters, with a footprint of 195 mm2 , or one-fourth the size of a postage stamp. The 1.6-MHz monolithic dc/dc converter supports input voltages from 4.5 to 17 V, allowing it to manage space-constrained 5- and 12-V POL designs, such as a wireless base station or high-density servers.

The dc/dc converter offers a voltage reference with ±1% accuracy over temperature. It achieves a 95% power conversion efficiency and a 25% lower RDS(on) than previous 6-A SWIFT devices. The device supports a 6-A continuous, 8-A peak load current, and a power-stage input voltage range from 1.6 to 17 V. It integrates two MOSFETs (26 and 19 mΩ) and comes in a 3.5 x 3.5-mm QFN package. Synchronized switching frequency from a master clock eliminates beat noise in sensitive data acquisition circuitry. Protection and performance features include power-good, enable, and tracking pins for sequencing. ($1.95 ea/1,000 — available now.)
