TactoTek has been awarded a mass-production contract for the Smart connector, which is going to be part of the Movesense motion-tracking platform of Suunto. TactoTek will manufacture the Smart connector in its factory in Oulu, Finland.
Movesense is a physical toolkit and open-development environment for motion-sensing solutions. It enables professionals and hobbyists to create movement-measuring apps that unlock a whole new avenue of motion-tracking use cases.
Smart connector is a key part of the Movesense platform, which is going to be incorporated into garments, shoes, sports equipment, and even dog collars. “It provides context information about specific activities being tracked to improve data richness and quality,” said Terho Lahtinen, head of marketing for Movesense.
Lahtinen added that TactoTek’s technology enables the Smart connector to be thin and flexible. That, in turn, makes it easy to integrate and withstand harsh environments, including full submersion and many washing machine cycles.
Smart connector will employ the injection-molded structural electronics (IMSE) technology that integrates printed circuitry and electronic components into 3D injection-molded plastics. And that will allow the Smart connector to include printed electronics and a silicon chip, thus facilitating a context-specific profile based on where it is integrated and the motion being tracked.
TactoTek adapts customer designs to IMSE technology, develops mass-production-ready prototypes, and produces or licenses the technology for third-party mass production.
