Freshly brewed coffee is only at the perfect temperature for a small time frame and often needs to be reheated if not drank right away. Say goodbye to that issue: California-based Ember Technologies has unveiled Ember, the smart coffee mug that keeps your cup of Joe hotter for a longer period of time.
Connected via Bluetooth LTE over a smartphone app, the 12-ounce (350 ml) mug uses patented phase-change heat and cooling technology to keep the beverage inside at your preferred temperature for approximately two hours. Phase-change tools shift from one state to another when exposed to different temperatures. When hot, the materials may change from solid to liquid and absorb and store heat during the process. When cooled, they may change back to solid and release heat.
Using the device requires that consumers first name their coffee mug before setting a preferred temperature. They may also set it up to have the app notify them when the scorching hot beverage has cooled. Ember Technologies says the mug will bring the drink down in temperature, so users will not have to wait for it to cool naturally.
The device allows preset temperatures for different drinks – if you like your coffee at 136° F but your tea at 142° F, no problem. The values can be saved in the app to make switching between the two simple.
Ember’s temperature can be adjusted with a rotating dial located below the small temperature display. To refuel, the smart mug is placed on a wireless charging pad that doubles as a coaster and restores a full charge in an hour and a half.
Available on Indiegogo with a pledge of $109 for the full package, the smart coffee mug is expected to begin shipping in April 2016.
